IVUKILE BEEFMASTER

The Lasater Philosophy of Cattle Breeding is a breeding program based on natural selection. Genetic progress is dominated by adaptation to the environment under a management system that treats every animal equally.

Hy was 20 jaar oud.

Three sources were incorporated into the Beefmaster breed. First was a Brahman herd developed by Tom Lasater’s father, Ed C Lasater. Secondly his father had a large herd of purebred Hereford cattle that had been selected for important traits, including pigment around the eyes and on the udders to withstand sandburn and the heat in Southern Texas.

The third source was two Shorthorn bulls purchased by Tom Lasater in the early 1930’s.

By 1937 he had converted all his cattle to the three-way cross which he referred to as his crossbred herd. Since then no cattle have been added to this herd. In 1949, the policy was adopted of requiring every cow on the ranch, two years old or older, to wean a merchantable calf every year. This was truly an exceptional thing. Tom Lasater had discovered that “a good cow is a cow that weans a good calf every year, period”. This is the watershed in the development of the breed, and the most important selection policy that distinguished this breed from any other breed anywhere around the world. The Beefmaster was recognized as a breed developed in the United States in 1954.

The Lasater Philosophy

According to Lasater there are Five Commandments for livestock breeding.

The first is to select only for the Six Essentials :

-          Disposition                  -  Temperament

-          Fertility                       -  Vrugbaarheid

-          Weight                        -  Gewig

-          Conformity                  -  Bouvorm

-          Hardiness                    -  Gehardheid

-          Milk Production            -  Melkproduksie

The second commandment is to strive for reproductive efficiency – until the calf stands in the weaning pen, all else is academic.

The fifth commandment is to utilize the adaptive power of nature. ‘Form follows Function’
